Why mass hold-down techniques are humane

Sir, The action of officer Derek Chauvin in the restraint of George Floyd was, of course, an obscenity. But some people have mistakenly complained that having two other officers holding Floyd down was also excessive. However in principle this is quite reasonable. As a judo instructor I teach people how to hold someone on the floor so they cannot escape. This can be difficult in a one-on-one situation – ie a judo contest – and sometimes you have to apply a painful pressure.

During my own training as a police officer we were shown how the more people restraining a prisoner the less pressure required from each so it causes less discomfort. But of course the acceptability of the procedure depends the manner in which it is applied.

Horace Edgerley Opines

As I considered the political situation laid out before me, I have been minded to coin a phrase which i think rather neatly sums up the predicament of our rulers: They must not fall into the trap of over-promising and under-delivering. So says our insightful political columnist Horace Edgerley.  Read him tomorrow: ONLY IN THE SECOND POST!
